Pain is a primary reason that patients visit their primary care physician. Opioids are an important option for pain management, but both the parent drug and its metabolites can produce adverse events. This article explains the role of active metabolites in the efficacy and tolerability of frequently prescribed opioid analgesics, and helps physicians select the most effective opioid analgesic for their patients.
